How do I tell if my child has eczema?

Just for you we have created a simple list of signs and symptoms to look out if you think your baby or child has eczema.

Here goes….

‘The itch that rashes‘ - uncontrollable itching causing dry, red, flaky skin.

Location - babies 1 month to 2 years old tend to get eczema on their cheeks, forehead and scalp. Older children tend to get it in the folds of their wrists, knees and ankles. It goes away and then it comes back - most rashes go away within a few days or weeks but eczema goes away for a short period and then reappears.

Age matters - Eczema usually starts young. Older children, such as a 10 year old who suddenly develops a sudden dry, itchy rash - it’s less likely to be eczema. But if a baby has these symptoms it is more likely to be eczema.

Night - it tends to be more noticeable at night.

Colour - in darker toned skin the rash might look purplish, brown or greyish. It will appear red in lighter toned skin.

Weeping - some patches can weep, develop cracks and even bleed. Infected skin can lead to light brown or yellow crusts.

Sleep - the itch can affect a good night's sleep. Some babies wear mitts to stop their nails breaking the skin.
